Digital Innovation, Data and Living Labs for Smart and Sustainable Tourism in the Canary Islands

Aligned with the objectives of the Spain Living Lab / Canarias Living Lab, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) – EMOTUR Lab commits to advancing data-driven and sustainable tourism through the development of tourism digital twins. By 2026, the institution will deliver at least one operational digital twin prototype for the Canary Islands, integrating Living Lab data, AI-based analytics, immersive simulation technologies and neurotourism insights to support visitor flow simulation, scenario testing and sustainability assessment. These digital twins will be embedded in training and research activities and supported by a multi-actor innovation ecosystem involving public authorities, DMOs, technology providers and tourism enterprises, fostering real-world experimentation and knowledge transfer across the tourism value chain.

Aligned with the strategic objectives of the Spain Living Lab / Canarias Living Lab to position the Canary Islands as a global reference for data-driven, digital and sustainable tourism, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – EMOTUR Lab commits to:


1. Developing tourism digital twins supported by Living Labs
We commit to leading the development and implementation of tourism digital twin environments, integrating: Real-world data generated through Living Labs, AI-driven analytics, Immersive simulation technologies, Neurotourism and behavioural insights.
By 2026, we commit to delivering at least one operational tourism digital twin prototype for the Canary Islands, enabling: Simulation of visitor flows, Scenario testing for service design and capacity management, Assessment of sustainability and social impact scenarios.


2. Integrating digital twins into training and research
We commit to embedding tourism digital twins into education, training and research activities, providing hands-on access to students, researchers and tourism professionals.
A minimum of three capacity-building sessions per year (2026–2028),
Focused on the interpretation and application of AI, neurotourism and digital twin insights for strategic planning, innovation and policy decision-making.


3. Expanding a multi-actor innovation ecosystem
We commit to collaborating with public authorities, destinations, DMOs, technology providers and tourism enterprises to enrich the Living Lab ecosystem and the digital twin model.
At least four formal collaboration agreements by 2027,
Expanding data sources, use cases and real-world applicability across the tourism value chain presenting showrooms at the European Tourism Day.
