Regulation (EU) 2018/1240, adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 12 September 2018, establishes the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) - an electronic travel authorisation system for visitors entering the Schengen Area or Cyprus for a short stay (up to 90 days within any 180-day period). The system applies to nationals of visa-exempt third countries, who will be required to obtain travel authorisation prior to their journey.

ETIAS is intended to strengthen border management by enhancing security, preventing illegal immigration, protecting public health, and supporting the objectives of the Schengen Information System. It also aims to facilitate more efficient border checks and assist in the prevention, detection, and investigation of terrorism and other serious crimes.

The system is expected to launch in late 2026. While no immediate action is required, stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for the changes.
